PNG Insight has received numerous questions about the 2025 Grade 11 selection for the Momase, Highlands, Southern, and New Guinea Islands regions. Last year, some principals released their Grade 11 selection lists ahead of the official announcements. So, when exactly will the official 2024 for 2025 Grade 11 Selection Lists for these regions be published?

Past Release Dates: A Reference Point

PNG Insight has tracked education and development trends in Papua New Guinea since 2014. The following dates, which we have recorded and analysed over the years, may be helpful for reference. 

Note that since 2020 (inclusive), selections have been conducted online, but the release date still falls around mid-December, similar to when the selections were conducted manually. No impact on effectiveness and efficiency.

2018 – Thur 20th December 2018 (Manual Selections)

Grade 11 Online Selection

The General Education Services Division (GES) is responsible for leading and facilitating the release of the Grade 11 selection list, as detailed in this article. Since 2020, the Education Department has conducted the selection online. This simply means principals select students and submit their data to GES for finalisation.

With the streamlined online process, one might expect the selection to take place in less than two weeks after the Grade 10 results are released. Two weeks was the timeframe when principals and provincial committees flew to Port Moresby for manual selection. 

(Note that DHERST Grade 12 selection takes LESS THAN 35 SECONDS. That's a fact, here is the PNG Insight's video on YouTube of the DHERST secretary explaining the process.)

Grade 11 Selection List for 2025

Some secondary schools have released their own Grade 11 selection lists for 2025, either on notice boards or social media. 

While this may seem convenient, be aware that these lists are unofficial unless officially signed by the Education Secretary. If the Secretary's signature and date are absent, disregard the list as invalid.

If the Education Secretary's signature and date are present and current, it implies the Grade 11 selection lists are ready. They are now in the hands of the GES Division and the ICT Division of the Education Department.

Unfortunately, even with the online system, there will be a wait. Patience is key.

Discussion Points (Grade 10 Results and Grade 11 Selections)

The Department of Education should prioritise the inclusion of both the Grade 10 Exam Results Release Date and the Grade 11 Selection Publication Date within the official Education Calendar. Or at the least, inform the public like what the higher education department (DHERST) did this year.

Doing so would provide clear direction and a definitive timeframe for the Measurement Services Division (MSD) and General Education Services Division (GES) to work towards. 

This clarity would not only benefit the MSD and GES, but also students, parents, principals, and the general public. These events, being national and recurring, deserve planning and transparency. There's no need to keep people guessing.

We hope this information clarifies the current situation and provides some reassurance to students and parents awaiting the official Grade 11 selection list.

Grade 9 selection list for 2025 MOMASE Region

The Grade 9 selection process is an important step in the education journey of students in the Momase Region. This process is based on the student’s performance in both internal and external assessments. In this article, PNG Insight takes a look at how to check the Grade 9 selection list for 2025 MOMASE region, and the important details about the selection students, parents and citizens should know.

Grade 8 Internal Assessments

Internal assessments are conducted by the school. These assessments measure the student’s progress throughout the year and provide valuable feedback to the student and their parents. 

The following subjects are assessed internally:

• English
• Mathematics
• Combined Subjects

Grade 8 Exam Marks - External Assessments

External assessments are administered by the National Department of Education as the Grade 8 Examinations. These assessments measure the student’s aptitude and skills in preparation for secondary school.

The Grade 8 Examination is a nationwide assessment that covers a wide range of topics. The exam consists of three papers: English, Mathematics, and Combined Subjects. Each paper is worth 50 marks.

Selection Criteria for Grade 9 Selection 2025 MOMASE Region

The selection criteria for Grade 9 are as follows. Students must:

• meet the minimum requirements in both internal and external assessments.
• be in good standing with the school and have no disciplinary issues.
• demonstrate strong leadership qualities and be able to work collaboratively.

Parents and guardians should know that the availability of spaces in some of the top secondary schools in the provinces may mean that only the top students are selected to continue Grade 9.

How Parents Can Find Out

Parents can find out if their child has been selected for Grade 9 by checking the provincial education office notice board. The notice board will display the Grade 9 selection list for the MOMASE Region.

The Grade 8 Certificate of Basic Education Examination (CoBEE) is an important award that should be given to every Grade 9 student. The CoBEE is a recognition of the student’s achievement in completing eight years of primary education. It is also a requirement for admission to secondary school.

Provincial Education Boards should prioritise issuing the CoBEE to Grade 8 school leavers. This will ensure that all students have a record of their accomplishments and are prepared for the next stage in their education.

Facts about Grade 9 Selection You Should Know

The Grade 9 Selection List for the 2025 Momase Region is the responsibility of the provincial education officials in Morobe, Madang and Sepik Provinces. 

The National Education Department is responsible for the development of the Grade 8 examination, but its administration and the selection of students for Grade 9 are the responsibility of the provincial education authorities. 

The best people to check the Grade 9 Selection List for 2025 Momase Region are the:

• Grade 8 Provincial Examination Supervisor (PES), 
• Guidance Officer, 
• School Inspector, and
• the Principals of secondary schools and the Head Teachers of high schools.

The Grade 8 Certificate of Basic Education Examination (CoBEE) is an important award that all Grade 9 students should receive.

When will Grade 11 selection Lists 2024 for 2025 PDF Come out?

The Department of Education (NDoE) has YET to release the Grade 11 selection Lists 2024 for 2025 PDF. The selection takes place immediately after the release of the Grade 10 Eaxm results. You can download the PDF files for Secondary Schools and National Schools of Excellence at the Department of Education website when the selection is complete.

Here is some information you should know as you anticipate the release of this year's Grade 11 selection list.

When will the Grade 11 selection list for 2024 for 2025 come out?

Last year, despite a one-week delay in the release of Grade 10 exam results, the Grade 11 selection lists were published relatively early. However, this year's Grade 11 selection process, initially scheduled for 4th - 8th December, encountered further delays due to the Grade 10 exam results. (Here is more information)

Rest assured, the Grade 11 selection, unlike previous years, will be completed within a week. Considering the time required to finalise the selection list and upload it to the Education Department website, expect the list to be published by mid-December.

2025 Grade 11 Selection List PNG National High and Secondary Schools - PNG UPDATE

The Grade 11 selection list for 2025 is usually released by the General Education Services (GES) of the National Education Department before the end of the year, mid-December. Perhaps it is important to understand the effort (and appreciate the timebound work) the education officials put into selecting the Grade 11 students.

Timebound Activity: Grade 11 Selection Release Date

The selection is timebound. As mentioned, though parents and stakeholders are desperate to see the list, we must also know that the list will (still) come out before the end of the year. No need to be worried. 

Take a look at the past release dates. This will give you an idea about when the Grade 11 selection list will come out this year.

How long does it take to do Grade 11 selection?

In 2020, it took 10 days (from the end of the selection) for the GES to publish the Grade 11 selection list. It took longer in 2021 (3 weeks) to finalise the publishing of the selection list in PDF. 

In 2022, the exam results came out 2 days early - this was since the selection was computerised, and done online. PNG Insight expects the 2024 Grade 11 selection for the 2025 academic year to take place within a week and finalised the published thereafter. Here is the latest article, read about it.

This may seem long for the waiting parents and stakeholders, but it is important to get it right and also for the education secretary to see the selection listing. 

Therefore, though it is a time-bound selection, GES and the education department do it well in 10 days after selections have been made.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 22 DEC 2021: The Grade 11 Selection Lists for all the Regions and Nationa High Schools are OUT NOW (22nd DECEMBER 2022). 

As we predicted, the list came out 2 weeks after the Grade 11 Selection Committee had completed the selection. 

The education department website is slow due to a high volume of traffic. You may find this frustrating, so go easy.

• Update#2: The 2022 Grade 11 selection is in progress.

According to the Education Secretary, the Grade 10 national exam results will be released to the Grade 11 Selection Conference on the 5th of December 2021.

That means that the 2021 Selection lists for National High and Secondary Schools are likely to be published after 2 weeks after the release of the results.
